This spell changes any creature or object into an object.
The target can be any creature, or any nonmagical object between Fine and Colossal size.
The chosen object form can be any solid object between Fine and Colossal size, whose size does not exceed the original subject's size by more than one category.
- Restrictions
- The chosen form cannot be so large that the process of changing size would cause it to intersect, move, or harm other creatures or objects.
- The chosen form must be a fully intact solid that cannot be readily destroyed. Thus, a cup of water, which could be spilled, is not a valid form.
- The chosen form must be comprised of a material at least as hardy as glass, paper, or straw.
- The chosen form must be made of existing materials. Thus, one could not simply invent a new material twice as strong as steel and polymorph his sword into it (but he could polymorph it into adamantium).
- The target must be a free body. A tower (of no larger than Colossal size) is valid, since it is not actually part of the earth, but rather sitting in a hole. One could not polymorph part of a structure, or an arbitrary section of the earth.
- Restrictions that explicitly do not apply
- The chosen form may be a valuable or rare material, such as gold or mithril.
- Special cases
- If the target is an object that contains creatures or objects, all creatures and magical objects are deposited harmlessly on the nearest stable surface within the spell's range. Any nonmagical objects are now part of the polymorphed object, and cannot be removed until the effect ends. If there is no safe place to deposit the contents, the spell does not work.
- Effects of the spell
- The subject is now an object, and therefore cannot take any physical actions. The subject retains awareness of its surroundings, using all of its normal perception. In fact, the subject now has 360-degree vision (assuming it had vision in the first place).
- The subject can take mental actions, including communicating via telepathy (if available), exercising mental control over any active spells that require it (such as dominate person), or casting spells without verbal, somatic, and material components.
- The subject retains its own hit points.
- The subject gains the hardness of its primary constituent substance. An iron spoon, for instance, gains hardness 10.
- The subject gains object energy resistance. (Half damage from fire, cold, electricity)
- The subject gains complete immunity to critical hits and precision damage.
- The subject gains complete immunity to Transmutation spells of 7th-level or less. Spells of higher level that successfully affect the target automatically end this effect.
- The subject gains complete immunity to negative energy effects, including death effects, ability damage and drain, and energy drain. The subject is not immune to negative energy damage.
- The subject loses the benefit of all magical and nonmagical equipment that was worn at the time of casting that do not specifically affect objects.
- The subject cannot gain the effect of any item, magical or non-magical, that does not specifically affect objects. (One item that does affect objects is Oil of Magic Weapon).
- The subject loses the benefit of all spells and effects in place at the time of casting that do not specifically affect objects. Such spells are not dispelled, but rather fail to affect the subject while Polymorph Any Object is in effect, though the duration of such spells does run down.
- The subject cannot gain the effect of any spell or effect that does not specifically affect objects. Such spells are not dispelled, but rather fail to affect the subject while Polymorph Any Object is in effect, though the duration of such spells does run down.
As a completely separate use, this spell can also be used to duplicate the effects of baleful polymorph, polymorph, flesh to stone, stone to flesh, transmute mud to rock, transmute metal to wood, or transmute rock to mud. In such a case, treat this spell in all ways like the chosen duplicated spell, including range, duration, save, and spell resistance.
